“The Aardvark F: Why It Looks Like a Pig but Isn’t One”
The Cape aardvark looks similar to a pig because of convergent evolution.
This process occurs when animals living in comparable environments — or using similar survival strategies — develop similar physical traits, even though they are not closely related.
The aardvark is a great example: it may resemble a pig, but genetically it belongs to a completely different branch of mammals. Its pig‑like appearance is simply the result of adapting to a similar lifestyle, not a sign of shared ancestry.
…called convergent evolution
The Cape aardvark looks like a pig because of something called convergent evolution.
This means that animals that live in a similar way can develop a similar body shape, even if they are not related.
The aardvark looks like a pig, but it is not a pig at all.
Its body only looks similar because it has a similar lifestyle, not because they come from the same family.
